Super Hero Halloween

Halloween costumes are expensive, especially ones officially certified Marvel, DC, etc. If you're on a budget but you're still feeling the "earth's mightiest" kind of vibe, try out some of these low-cost costume alternatives:

Magneto

Wolverine

Okay okay, just kidding. These are called "low budget xmen" from the blog The Awesomer. There are four total, but these are my personal favorites.

In all seriousness you can still have your super hero costumes. Several different stores and websites carry tshirts resembling the top of superhero costumes.

You can also buy or make props for added effect, and if you're having a hard time finding the right color purple boot or something, here's a tutorial on how to make boots from duct tape:

All Hallow's Read Book Exchange: Green Valley Library, October 30, 4pm

Neil Gaiman, Author of The Graveyard Book

You, too, can participate in this year's All Hallow's Read by bringing one spooky book to the Green Valley Library on October 30th, at 4pm. We will have some light refreshments, eerie sounds of the season, and you can make a creepy craft! Bonus points if you come in costume, you might even get a special treat! Swap your spooky book with a friend and, in turn, get a new title to add to your bookshelf. Hope to see you there! (Ages 12-17 only please!)

Banned Books Week: Sept 30-Oct 6

Celebrate your freedom to read during Banned Books Week! Don't know what that is? Here's a quote from the American Library Association:

"Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular."

Read more here: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/banned

To honor our right to read, we have a "Don't Read These Books" display in the Green Valley Library Teen Lounge. Stop on by and grab your copy of one of the most commonly banned or challenged books, such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, or Beloved by Toni Morrison.
